It all started in Alexandria,
Egypt, in the summer of 1999 in the beautiful
Mediterranean city where three teenagers met for the
first time and set out to make Arabic hip-hop an
undisputable reality. When Mahmoud and Mikey (18
years) who were already close school friends, met
Takki (17 years) for the first time they all
instantly hit it off which was no surprise because
they were three of the biggest hip-hop fans in Alex
at a time when rap was big in the city. Takki who
had already started recording on his own some tracks
at home was encouraged by Mahmoud and Mikey to
continue experimenting and recording his catchy
music. The only problem was he didn’t stand a chance
rapping in English for an Arab audience and so one
day Takki wrote some lyrics but this time it was
different it was in Arabic. Mahmoud and Mikey said
it sounded great and loved the idea. In no time the
three started creating more lyrics in Arabic with
the help of Takki who has more experience in writing
and beats so they recorded their first underground
single "ew3a weshak" (better known as “ana esmy
mikey”) which was the beginning for MTM and Arabic
rap. In 2001 the song spread like fire all over Alex
and everyone was loving it, Mahmoud did a great job
spreading it on the internet and burning copies for
their friends. It was definitely something new and
incredibly catchy, MTM decided they had to kick
things up a notch so they performed in May 2001 at
The Sporting Club in Alex and the crowd went crazy
when they heard them. In the summer of 2001 MTM were
well known and already making their way to becoming
a household name in Alex and Cairo, and when they
toured with DJ Yasser Shaker the north coast (el
sa7el el shamaly), they were constantly cheered by
the crowds who responded very well to the group. At
one concert sound engineer Yousry Shaker told them
that they could get signed by a record label and
actually introduced them to a producer who instantly
grabbed this opportunity and signed them on the
spot. |

MTM signed their first contract
in 2002 and started performing at various venues in
Cairo and Alex, but the deal wasn’t good enough, the
producer wasn’t making any effort to release an
album or video and his progress was slow. After
being introduced by Nihal Sedky (model) to a famous
director who showed interest in MTM's music and
asked them to break their contract with their
previous producer and sign with him instead. Since
their producer was failing they agreed, and signed
their second contract with H. El Baguri. Later on
they appeared on national TV twice, they also
performed at various events including Miss Teen Alex
and at Dream Park on the first day of the feast.
Unfortunate events such as their new producer
getting convicted of a crime lead to a big delay of
MTM's album and video début. Since their producer
couldn’t fulfill his contract, MTM suddenly felt
like they had to find a better way to release their
album which was scheduled for the summer of 2002.
MTM proved that nothing could stop them from
fulfilling their destiny. |

Maha Awad (stylist and talk show
host) liked and appreciated MTM’s fresh new style so she
took it on herself to find them a better deal. After
trying different things they were finally offered a deal
with Sony Egypt but the company later decided not to
venture in Egypt because of the absence of copy right
laws in the country. They were unlucky for the first few
months but just as they began to give up and feel there
was no hope Mikey got a call from Khoga (sound engineer)
who had recorded MTM's demo, he contacted them because
he knew a producer looking to sign a young group like
MTM. Feeling they were perfect for this opportunity they
went to Cairo and met with their third producer Ahmed
Efat on a day when Mikey was supposed to go to a movie
set were he had been chosen to play a role in a big
movie production but he chose to go to the meeting with
Efat instead. The producer was thrilled with the demo
and the concert tapes, he decided that right after
signing they would start recording straight away, and
then shoot their first video, after recording the whole
album everyone agreed that "Ummi mesafra " was the ideal
hit song the group needed to create their name in the
market, In July they shot the video and the album hit
the streets in August, It was an Instant success, Mikey
drove the girls crazy with his playboy looks and smooth
voice, Mahmoud with his moves and energy and Takki with
his sense of humor and approachable nature, everyone was
talking about the video, the music and the lyrics, the
sarcastic humor sparked waves of attacks and
controversy, but all the criticism just added to the
hype surrounding the song. It was a big hit and took the
country by storm; you could here MTM blasting through
car radios, shops, cabs, and even weddings |

shows in the Middle East, and went on tour which ended
in Dubai where they were awarded the Arabian Music
Academy Award, MTM returned to Egypt and were shocked to
find out that Mahmoud who's presence was essential for
the group was drafted by the military, that didn’t stop
MTM from working on their second album, Takki started
writing and innovating beats with the help of Mikey who
decided that he was going to add a little melody to his
flow, and the album "telephony beyren" came out in
November 2004 and was also a great success. The
Telephony beyren video showed that MTM's music was
evolving, Songs like "zay manta 3ayez" grabbed the ears

that there was a totally different side to their music,
Takki's lyrics were so fresh and real and Mounir
Hamoudi's performance lifted the song to another level.

their biggest crowd, more than 15 thousand teenagers

show in the Middle East with host Hala Sarhan who even
joined MTM wearing a big faux fur collar coat and danced
along to the music. In 2006 MTM joined with UNDP (United
Nations Development Program) to help in their
development campaign for Egypt, their new single "lazem
bokra" which is still unreleased, discusses social and
development issues in the country, the video for the
song is in progress and will feature MTM in clay
animated characters. MTM also performed live at a number
of places including Al sakkia, Lagoon Resort, Oxygen
Beach, MSA, and the dance4life event surrounding the
Pyramids in Giza. Fans have been eagerly awaiting the
release of MTM's third album and rumors have spread that
MTM split up, which is completely untrue.
Like all their dedicated fans MTM is now also awaiting
the release of their new album, which has been hampered
by logistical issues. |
